Hybris (vice)

Hubris or hybris (Greek ), according to its modern usage, is exaggerated self pride or self-confidence (overbearing pride), often resulting in fatal retribution. In Ancient Greece, "hubris" referred to actions taken in order to shame the victim, thereby making oneself seem superior.Hubris was a crime in classical Athens. The category of acts constituting hubris for the ancient Greeks apparently broadened from the original specific reference to molestation of a corpse, or a humiliation of a defeated foe, to molestation, or "outrageous treatment", in general. The meaning was further generalized in its modern English usage to apply to any outrageous act or exhibition of pride or disregard for basic moral law. Such an act may be referred to as an "act of hubris", or the person committing the act may be said to be hubristic.

L’hybris (aussi écrit ubris, du grec ancien  / húbris) est une notion grecque que l'on peut traduire par « démesure ». C'est un sentiment violent inspiré par les passions et plus particulièrement, par l'orgueil. Les Grecs lui opposaient la tempérance, ou modération (sophrosune). Dans la Grèce antique, l’hybris était considérée comme un crime. Elle recouvrait des violations comme les voies de fait, les agressions sexuelles et le vol de propriété publique ou sacrée. On en trouve deux exemples bien connus dans des discours de Démosthène, le Contre Médias et le Contre Conon.

Hybris - pojęcie w kulturze starożytnej Grecji oznaczające dumę, pychę rodową lub majestat władcy, które uniemożliwiają mu prawidłowe rozpoznanie sytuacji, w której się znalazł. Pycha ta stanowi przekroczenie miary, którą bogowie wyznaczyli człowiekowi (zob. dike), stanowi więc wyzwanie wobec bogów i ściąga na siebie ich karę. Pojęcie "hybris" znalazło wyraz zwłaszcza w tragedii greckiej, w której często jest głównym czynnikiem prowadzącym do katastrofy bohatera.

Hybris (ὕβρις) znamenala v řeckém starověku navenek projevovanou pýchu, domýšlivost a aroganci, vyzývavé, drzé jednání a vystupování, jež nutně vyvolá trest bohů, který pak postihne celou společnost. Původ slova se odvozuje od předpony hyper- a slovesa jít, kráčet; označovalo tedy něco jako překročení mezí.
