Huntsville (Alabama)

Huntsville is the county seat of Madison County, Alabama. Huntsville is the largest city in northern Alabama in a region of a half-million people, with the city proper having 168,132 residents (2006 estimate). Started with a single cabin in 1805, the city was incorporated six years later as Twickenham. However, it was renamed "Huntsville" (after first settler John Hunt) during the War of 1812, and has grown across nearby hills and along the Tennessee River, adding textile mills, then munitions factories, to become a major city, hosting the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal.

Huntsville ist eine Stadt im Madison County im US-Bundesstaat Alabama, USA, mit 165.600 Einwohner (Stand: 2004). Die geographischen Koordinaten sind: 34,71° Nord, 86,63° West. Die Stadtfläche beträgt 451,8 km².Hier befindet sich auch das Redstone Arsenal, ein Raketen-Entwicklungszentrum und Testgelände durch das die Stadt auch als Rocket City bekannt wurde. Am 8. September 1960 wurde durch den US-Präsidenten Dwight D. Eisenhower das Marshall Space Flight Center der NASA in Huntsville eingeweiht. Seit den 1950er Jahren wurden dort unter der Leitung von Wernher von Braun die Saturn-Raketen und das Apollo-Programm entwickelt. Huntsville ist auch der Geburtsort des Wikipedia-Gründers, Jimmy Wales.
