Humanism entails a commitment to the search for truth and morality through human means in support of human interests. In focusing on the capacity for self-determination, Humanism rejects the validity of transcendental justifications, such as a dependence on belief without reason, the supernatural, or texts of allegedly divine origin. Humanists endorse universal morality based on the commonality of the human condition, suggesting that solutions to human social and cultural problems cannot be parochial.

L’humanisme est une vaste catégorie de philosophies portant sur l'éthique qui affirment la dignité et la valeur de tous les individus, fondée sur la capacité de déterminer le bien et le mal par le recours à des qualités humaines universelles — en particulier la rationalité. L'humanisme implique un engagement à la recherche de la vérité et de la moralité par l'intermédiaire des moyens humains, en particulier les sciences, en solidarité avec l'humanité. En mettant l'accent sur la capacité d'auto-détermination, l'humanisme rejette la validité des justifications transcendantes, comme une dépendance à l'égard de la croyance sans raison, du surnaturel, ou de textes présentés comme d'origine divine. Humanismus ist eine aus der abendländischen Philosophie hergeleitete Weltanschauung, die sich an den Interessen, den Werten und der Würde insbesondere des einzelnen Menschen orientiert. Toleranz, Gewaltfreiheit und Gewissensfreiheit gelten als wichtige humanistische Prinzipien menschlichen Zusammenlebens. Die eigentliche Frage des Humanismus ist aber: Was ist der Mensch? Was ist sein wahres Wesen? Wie kann der Mensch dem Menschen ein Mensch sein?

Onder humanisme wordt een hedendaagse levensbeschouwing verstaan die de mens centraal stelt en uitgaat van de waarde van de mens (Latijn: humanus = 'menselijk'). Ook is het een beweging in de Renaissance van geleerden ("humanisten", pas in de 19e eeuw afgeleid van het Italiaanse umanista = "docent  Latijnse letteren" of humaniora) die in de Middeleeuwen meenden dat door een vernieuwde studie van de klassieken de westerse beschaving tot op haar bronnen kon worden teruggevoerd. In deze tweede betekenis is het humanisme een historisch fenomeen. Als levensbeschouwing beschouwt het hedendaagse humanisme zichzelf als de erfgenaam van het veranderde wereldbeeld dat door die eerste humanisten werd ingezet, zowel op intellectueel als op religieus terrein. De invloed van zijn humanitaire en seculiere gedachtegoed op het socialisme en het liberalisme is groot, terwijl het humanisme zelf als georganiseerde levensbeschouwing geen grote aanhang heeft.
