A
diagram which is used to represent the various forms of
galaxy , according to the Hubble classification scheme.
Elliptical galaxies are divided up into eight subclasses from E0, which is a sphere, to E7, which is an oblate spheroid (similar to a rugby ball). These subclasses are placed along the handle of the tuning fork. The two prongs of the fork show three subclasses of
spiral galaxy and three subclasses of
barred-spiral galaxy . The subclasses define the size of the galactic nucleus and also how tightly the arms are wound. Where the prongs join the handle an intermediate form of galaxy known as a
lenticular galaxy is placed. No
irregular galaxies are shown on the tuning fork. They are usually depicted to one side of the of the diagram .
