Huastec people

This article is about the Huastec people, whose native language Wastek (Huastec) is a Mayan language. The Huastec inhabit a region of Mexico known as La Huasteca, and neighboring variants of the Nahuatl language are also known as La Huasteca Nahuatl, unrelated linguistically to Wastek. The Huastec, also rendered as Huaxtec, Wastek and Huastecos, are an indigenous people of Mexico, historically based in the states of Hidalgo, Veracruz, San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas concentrated along the route of the Panuco River and along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The Huastec people call themselves Teenek.

Les Huaxtèques (prononcer le « x » : « ch », selon la graphie espagnole ancienne pour désigner le son « ch ») de l'État de San Luis Potosí et du nord de l'État de Veracruz au Mexique, parlent une langue apparentée au Maya. Le mot lui-même proviendrait du nahuatl « Cuexteca » qui signifie « les gens du cuir ».

Huastekowie - Indianie z grupy Majów, zamieszkujący terytoria obecnych meksykańskich stanów: Veracruz i San Luís Potosí. Huastekowie różnią się znacznie od innych Majów i są od nich oddzieleni geograficznie. Zajmują się głównie rolnictwem (uprawa kukurydzy, kawy, owoców) i hodowlą. Oprócz tego wykonują wyroby włókiennicze i ceramiczne. Większość praktykuje katolicyzm. Posiadają swój własny język huastek (grupa maja-kicze), sami Huastekowie nazywają go teenek. Szacuje się, że populacja Huasteków liczy ok. 80 tys. osób.
