Hornwort

The name Hornwort is also often applied to an aquatic plant Ceratophyllum demersum in the family Ceratophyllaceae Hornworts are a group of bryophytes, or non-vascular plants, comprising the division Anthocerotophyta. The common name refers to the elongated horn-like structure, which is the sporophyte. The flattened, green plant body of a hornwort is the gametophyte plant.Hornworts may be found world-wide, though they tend to grow only in places that are damp or humid. Some species grow in large numbers as tiny weeds in the soil of gardens and cultivated fields. Large tropical and sub-tropical species of Dendroceros may be found growing on the bark of trees.

Les Anthocérotes (Anthocerotophyta) sont un embranchement de plantes embryophytes terrestres aux caractères ancestraux. Avec les hépatiques et les mousses, on les regroupe sous le nom de bryophytes. Glewiki (Anthoceropsida) - klasa roślin należąca do typu (gromady) mszaków. Najbardziej prymitywna grupa mszaków licząca około 100 gatunków. Niekiedy glewiki traktowane są jako oddzielna podgromada Anthocerophytina.

Constituem um pequeno filo com cerca de 100 espécies. Os membros do gênero Anthoceros são os mais familiares dos seis gêneros. Os gametófitos dos antóceros assemelham-se aqueles das hepáticas talosas, mas existem muitas características que indicam um relacionamento relativamente distante. As células da maioria das espécies geralmente tem um único cloroplasto grande, com um pirenóide, como na alga verde Coleochaete. Algumas especies de antóceros apresentam células contendo muitos cloroplastos pequenos sem pirenóides, como a maior parte das células vegetais, mas mesmo nesses antóceros a célula apical contém um único plastídio, refletindo a condição ancestral.
