Hommage

For medieval usage see homage (medieval) and commendation ceremony, or Homage (disambiguation) Homage (from the French: Hommage) is generally used in modern English to mean any public show of respect to someone to whom one feels indebted. In this sense, a reference within a creative work to someone who greatly influenced the artist would be a homage. It is typically used to denote a reference in a work of art or literature to another, at least somewhat widely known, work. In literature and film, an homage is similar to an allusion, except that whereas an allusion merely refers to another work, an homage typically repeats a recognizable scene or stylistic element from the other work. Homage is also similar to parody, except that parodies typically exaggerate characteristics of previous works for comedic effect.

Dans le système féodal, l’hommage est l’établissement ou le renouvellement d'une convention de vassalité qui interdisait toute rivalité entre deux hommes libres. La cérémonie devait en général avoir lieu au manoir seigneurial du futur suzerain en présence de plusieurs témoins. Elle rappelait publiquement l'existence d'une relation de féodalité entre deux familles, voire deux lignages, représentés par leur chefs qui pouvaient être une femme. Bien que typiquement hiérarchique, le contrat de vassalité entre les deux groupes les place dans un rapport de complémentarité dont les conditions ne sont pas déséquilibrées.

Meist sind die Urheber einer Hommage auch selbst berühmt.Als Hommage werden vor allem alle Verweise gesehen, die im Rahmen eines künstlerischen Werks gegeben werden und jemanden hervorheben, dem der Künstler besondere Anregungen für sein Werk verdankt.Oft sind Kunstwerke als Ganzes explizit als Hommage entworfen. Von vielen Leuten wird etwa Woody Allens Film Manhattan als eine Hommage für New York gesehen, und aus gutem Grund kann man das Album Abbey Road als eine Hommage sehen, welche die Beatles für ihr Plattenstudio gegeben haben.
