Holy Roman Emperor

The Holy Roman Emperor (, ) was the elected monarch ruling over the Holy Roman Empire, a Central European state in existence during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. By convention the first Emperor was taken to be the Frankish king Charlemagne, crowned as Emperor of the West by Pope Leo III on 25 December 800, although the Empire itself (as well as the style Holy Roman Emperor) did not come into use until some time later. Holy Roman Emperors were crowned by the Popes up until the 16th century, and the last Emperor, Francis II, abdicated in 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars that saw the Empire's final dissolution.

Le titre des souverains du Saint Empire romain germanique fut empereur des Romains, puis à partir de 1508 empereur élu des Romains (electus Romanorum imperator). La désignation de l'empereur était effectuée par un collège de princes, appelés électeurs. Le souverain élu par ces princes était appelé roi des Romains jusqu'à ce qu'il soit sacré par le pape.

Il Sacro Romano Imperatore fu, con alcune variazioni, il sovrano del Sacro Romano Impero, il predecessore della moderna Germania, durante il suo periodo di esistenza, dal X secolo al suo collasso nel 1806.La terminologia del titolo è in qualche modo ambigua. Si riteneva che il titolo di "Imperatore" fosse passato dai Romani al Regno Franco quando, nell'800 d.C., Papa Leone III incoronò come imperatore Carlo Magno, re dei Franchi, in cambio per la protezione della chiesa. Dopo la divisione del reame franco in tre parti, sancita dal trattato di Verdun dell'843, il titolo rimase inizialmente nel regno centrale di Lotaringia, ma infine passò ad est quando Ottone I il Grande, re dei Franchi orientali, venne incoronato imperatore nel 962. Il trasferimento dell'Impero, nella teoria medioevale, veniva indicato come translatio imperii.
