The Holocene is a geological epoch which began at the end of the Pleistocene (around 12,000 ¹⁴C years ago) and continues to the present. The Holocene is part of the Quaternary period. Its name comes from the Greek words (holos, whole or entire) and (kainos, new), meaning "entirely recent". It has been identified with the current warm period, known as MIS 1 and based on that past evidence, can be considered an interglacial in the current ice age.

Das Holozän ist der jüngste Zeitabschnitt der Erdgeschichte; er dauert bis heute an. In der Hierarchie der chronostratigraphischen Einheiten nimmt es den Rang einer Serie ein, wird aber nicht in Stufen unterteilt. Das Holozän begann vor etwa 11.700 ± 99 Jahre b2k (= vor dem Jahr 2000) mit der Erwärmung des Klimas am Ende des Pleistozäns. Holozän und Pleistozän gehören zum Quartär, dem jüngsten System des Känozoikum. In der englischen Terminologie wird das Holozän mitunter auch als Present (dt. „Gegenwart“) bezeichnet.

Nazwą holocen (dawniej używano też nazwy aluwium) obejmuje się obecną epokę neogenu - ostatnie 11,5 tysięcy lat (11,5 tys. lat BP - ang. before present, czyli licząc wstecz od 1950 r.; data radiowęglowa - 10,2 tys. lat BP ). Epoka ta rozpoczyna się z końcem ostatniego zlodowacenia, a dokładnie z końcem zimnej fazy młodszego dryasu (późny glacjał).
