Holocene

The Holocene epoch is a geological period, which began approximately 11,550 calendar years BP (about 9600 BC) and continues to the present. The Holocene is part of the Neogene and Quaternary periods. Its name comes from the Greek words (holos, whole or entire) and (kainos, new), meaning "entirely recent". It has been identified with MIS 1 and can be considered an interglacial in the current ice age.

Das Holozän ist die jüngste geologische Epoche der Erdgeschichte. Es begann vor etwa 11.700 Jahren mit der Erwärmung des Klimas am Ende des Pleistozäns. Beide Epochen gehören zum Quartär, dem jüngsten Abschnitt des Neogen. In der englischen Terminologie wird das Holozän mitunter auch als Present (dt. „Gegenwart“) bezeichnet.

Nazwą holocen (dawniej używano też nazwy aluwium) obejmuje się obecną epokę neogenu - ostatnie 11,5 tysięcy lat (11,5 tys. lat BP - ang. before present, czyli licząc wstecz od 1950 r.; data radiowęglowa - 10,2 tys. lat BP ). Epoka ta rozpoczyna się z końcem ostatniego zlodowacenia, a dokładnie z końcem zimnej fazy młodszego dryasu (późny glacjał).

L'Olocene è l'epoca geologica più recente, quella in cui ci troviamo oggi ed ha avuto inizio circa 10.000 anni fa. Il limite con l'epoca inferiore (il Pleistocene) è definito sulla base del decadimento del ¹⁴C (un isotopo radioattivo del carbonio) e coincide approssimativamente con il termine dell'ultima fase glaciale che ha interessato l'emisfero settentrionale. Per convenzione il limite è posto a 10.000 anni dal 1950 e viene espresso in milioni di anni (quindi 0,01143 ± 0,00013 Ma).
