Hokkaido Wolf

The Hokkaido Wolf , also known as the Ezo Wolf, is one of the two extinct subspecies of the Gray Wolf that have been called the Japanese Wolf. The other is the Honshū Wolf.This endemic wolf of Japan occupied the island of Hokkaidō. The Hokkaido Wolf was larger than the Honshū Wolf, more closely approaching the size of a regular Gray Wolf.The Hokkaido Wolf became extinct during the Meiji restoration period. The wolf was deemed a threat to ranching (which the Meiji government promoted at the time) and targeted via a bounty system and a direct chemical extermination campaign. Hokkaido experienced significant development during this period and the Hokkaido Wolf also suffered from resulting environmental disruption.

Der Hokkaidō-Wolf (Canis lupus hattai), auch Ezo-Wolf (jap. エゾオオカミ, Ezo-Ōkami) genannt, war eine Unterart des Wolfes und wird gelegentlich gemeinsam mit dem Honshū-Wolf als Japanischer Wolf bezeichnet. Der Hokkaidō-Wolf gilt heute ebenso wie der Honshū-Wolf als ausgestorben. Während der Honshū-Wolf aufgrund der Inselverzwergung als eine der kleinsten Unterarten des Wolfes gilt, entspricht der Hokkaidō-Wolf der normalen Körpergröße. Sein Verbreitungsgebiet umfasste die japanische Insel Hokkaidō. Die letzten Exemplare dieser Unterart starben 1889 aufgrund einer Vergiftungskampagne durch japanische Bauern.

Wilk Ezo (Canis lupus hattai lub Canis hattai) (zwany wilkiem z Hokkaidō) — wymarły podgatunek wilka, który zamieszkiwał na wyspie Hokkaido. Jego wymiary były większe niż wilka karłowatego, był też bardziej podobny do zwykłych wilków szarych ze stałego lądu. Wilki Ezo wymarł prawdopodobnie w 1889 roku w wyniku podtruwania przez rolników.
