This article is about the history of South Asia prior to the Partition of India in 1947. For the history of the modern Republic of India, see History of the Republic of India. The History of India begins with the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished in the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent from 3300 to 1700 BCE. This Bronze Age civilization was followed by the Iron Age Vedic period, which witnessed the rise of major kingdoms known as the Mahajanapadas. In two of these, in the 6th century BCE, Mahavira and Gautama Buddha were born.

Die älteste bekannte Zivilisation auf dem indischen Subkontinent, und eine der ältesten Hochkulturen der Welt, ist die Indus-Kultur. Ihre Geschichte reicht mindestens 5000 Jahre zurück. Leonard Woolley nahm an, dass arische Stämme um etwa 1500 v. Chr. in das Gebiet der Induskultur eindrangen. Die Vermischung und kulturelle Befruchtung zwischen Ariern und den früheren Bewohnern der Region ließ die klassische indische Kultur entstehen und prägte den damals aufkommenden Hinduismus entscheidend.

Indie w szerokim rozumieniu to subkontynent w Azji Południowej, wielki półwysep na Oceanie Indyjskim, o powierzchni prawie 7,5 mln km². Od północy ograniczony masywem  Himalajów, od wschodu dżunglami birmańskimi, otwarty jest tylko od północnego zachodu na Afganistan i Iran.

De geschiedenis van de Republiek India begon op 15 augustus 1947 toen India een onafhankelijke Dominion werd binnen het Britse Gemenebest. Op datzelfde moment werd het door moslims gedomineerde noordwesten en oosten van Brits-Indië afgescheiden om de Dominion van Pakistan te vormen. Louis Mountbatten en later Chakravarti Rajagopalachari waren Gouverneur-Generaal, het grondwettelijke staatshoofd. Jawaharlal Nehru werd de eerste minister-president van India en Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel werd de eerste vice-premier en minister van Binnenlandse Zaken.
