Historical Vedic religion

This article discusses the historical religious practices in the Vedic time period; see Hinduism and Indian religions for details of continued religious practices. The religion of the Vedic period (also known as Vedism or Vedic Brahmanism or, in a context of Indian antiquity, simply Brahmanism) is the historical predecessor of Hinduism and the other Indian religions. Its liturgy is reflected in the Mantra portion of the four Vedas. The religious practices centered on a clergy administering sacrificial rites. A small fraction of conservative Shrautins continue this tradition today within contemporary Hinduism.

Le védisme est l'ensemble des croyances et des comportements rituels qui se sont développés en Inde à la suite de l'immigration des populations aryennes. Les textes sacrés fondamentaux du védisme sont les quatre Vedas. Les formules et les hymnes transmis par les Vedas mettent en évidence la primauté tout aussi bien du sacrifice que du savoir, lesquels constitueront les bases du brahmanisme et de l'hindouisme .

Vedisk religion ser man som den äldsta indiska religionen som hade en skriftlig tradition. Det härstammar ifrån ca 1500-500 f.Kr. Man tror att den har kommit till Indien med vandrande stammar ifrån väst, vilket gör att de första utövarna av den vediska religionen alltså var indoeuropéer. Det har även hittats likheter med iransk religion under samma tid. De vediska och iranska religionerna har likartade texter. Därför tror man att några av dessa vandrande folkstammar har stannat i Iran och att några fortsatt till Indien.

Den Vediske kulturs religion er forløberen for både den klassiske og den moderne Hinduisme, men også for Buddhismen og Jainismen. Religionens liturgi findes beskrevet i Vedateksterne, hvor man også kan se, at den var centreret omkring et præsteskab af brahminer, som foretog de rituelle ofringer. En lille gruppe inden for den konservative Shrauta-bevægelse fastholder stadig denne tradition i den moderne hinduisme.
