HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I (usually shortened to HIStory) is the ninth studio album by American recording artist Michael Jackson, released on June 16, 1995 by Epic Records. The majority of the album's tracks were written and produced by Jackson. HIStory was the first album to be released by Jackson since he was accused of child sexual abuse in August 1993. Recorded during late 1994 and early 1995, several of the double album's fifteen songs pertain to the accusations and Jackson's mistreatment in the media, specifically the tabloids. The songs' themes included environmental awareness, isolation, greed, and injustice.

History (from Greek  - historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation") is the discovery, collection, organization, and presentation of information about past events. History can also mean the period of time after writing was invented. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it sometimes attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and its usefulness. This includes discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present. The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history. Events of the past prior to written record are considered prehistory.

Histoire bezeichnet in der Literaturwissenschaft nach den französischen Literaturwissenschaftlern Tzvetan Todorov und Gerard Genette den Inhalt, das „Was“ der Erzählung, das im Gegensatz zum discours, dem „Wie“ der Erzählung, steht. Der Begriff geht auf Émile Benveniste zurück, der ihn in seinen "Problèmes de linguistique générales" entwickelt hat.

Daneben bedeutet Geschichte aber auch die Betrachtung der Vergangenheit im Gedenken, im Erzählen und in der Geschichtsschreibung. Forscher, die sich der Geschichtswissenschaft widmen, nennt man Historiker.

L’histoire est à la fois l’étude des faits, des événements du passé et, par synecdoque, l’ensemble de ces faits, de ces événements. Le nom a pour origine les Enquêtes (, Historíai en grec) d’Hérodote, mais c’est Thucydide qui lui applique le premier des méthodes critiques, notamment le croisement de sources différentes et qui s'efforce de trouver les causes rationnelles et non plus divines des faits historiques. Ibn Khaldoun suit la même voie avant que Tamerlan ne le transforme en à sa gloire. Montesquieu le fera également en se dégageant de l'influence de Bossuet qui dans son Histoire universelle mêlait chroniques historiques et écrits religieux fondamentaux.
