Hindustan Motors

Hindustan Motors is an automobile manufacturer from India. It is part of the Birla group of industries.It is the producer of the famous Ambassador car, widely used as a taxicab and as a government limousine. One of the original three car manufacturers in India, founded in 1942, it was a leader in car sales until the 1980s, when the industry was opened up from protection.Hindustan has a joint venture with Mitsubishi, producing versions of the Lancer and Pajero, but is best known for its own models.

Hindustan Motors ist einer der drei ältesten indischen Automobilhersteller, der 1942 von der indischen Industriellenfamilie Birla in Port Okha bei Gujarat gegründet wurde. 1944 nahm man dort die Lizenzfertigung britischer Nutzfahrzeuge auf, wozu sich 1946 auch Morris-PKW gesellten. Da während des Zweiten Weltkriegs der Transportweg von Großbritannien nach Indien praktisch abgeschnitten war, gedieh die indische Wirtschaft in dieser Zeit. Nach der Unabhängigkeit Indiens und dem Ersten Indisch-Pakistanischen Krieg 1948 wurde die Produktion von Hindustan nach Uttapara bei Kolkata in Westbengalen verlegt.
