Herodotus of Halicarnassus (Greek: Hērodotos Halikarnāsseus) was a Greek historian from Ionia who lived in the 5th century BC (ca. 484 BC–ca.  425 BC) and is regarded as the "Father of History". He is almost exclusively known for writing The Histories, a record of his 'inquiries' (or '', a word that passed into Latin and took on its modern connotation of 'history') into the origins of the Greco-Persian Wars which occurred in 490 and 480-479 BC — especially since he includes a narrative account of that period, which would otherwise be poorly documented, and many long digressions concerning the various places and peoples he encountered during wide-ranging travels around the lands of the Mediterranean and Black Sea. However, his stories were not always completely accurate.

Hérodote (en grec ancien  / Hêródotos), né vers -484 ou -482 à Halicarnasse (colonie grecque située sur le territoire des Cariens), actuellement Bodrum (Turquie), mort vers -425 à Thourioi, est un historien grec. Il a été surnommé le « père de l'Histoire » par Cicéron (les Lois, , 1), mais aussi du reportage ; il est en outre considéré comme l'un des premiers explorateurs. C'est également le premier prosateur dont l'œuvre nous soit restée.

Herodot von Halikarnass(os) (griech. , Heródotos, * um 484 v. Chr.; † ca.435-430 v. Chr.) war ein antiker griechischer Historiograph, Geograph und Völkerkundler. Er wurde von Cicero (De leg. 1,5) zugleich als „Vater der Geschichtsschreibung“ (lat. pater historiae) und als Erzähler „zahlloser Geschichten“ (lat. innumerabiles fabulae) bezeichnet. Sein einziges erhaltenes Werk sind die neun Bücher umfassenden Historien, die in Form einer Universalgeschichte die Kriege der Griechen mit den Persern im 6. und 5. Jahrhundert vor Christus schildern.

Herodot z Halikarnasu (gr. Ἡρόδοτος ὁ Ἁλικαρνασσεύς Herodotos ho Halikarnasseus) - historyk grecki ur. ok. 484 p.n.e. w Halikarnasie (w czasach rzymskich Peronium, obecnie Bodrum w Turcji), zm. ok.426 p.n.e. w Turioj lub w Atenach, zwany "Ojcem historii". Można także nazwać go ojcem geografii. Jedynym zachowanym jego dziełem jest 9-tomowa relacja z wojen perskich, opisująca także geografię i historię Hellady,  Persji i Egiptu oraz okolicznych krain, zatytułowana Dzieje (gr. Ἱστορίαι Historiai, łac. Historiae). Jego relacje nie były zawsze dokładne, ale - w odróżnieniu od wielu innych historyków, aż po czasy dzisiejsze - zawsze opatrzone klauzulą "zgodnie z tym, czego się dowiedziałem" (Dzieje, I, 2).

È ritenuto il "padre della storia" in quanto, nella sua opera delle "Storie" che in greco significa inchiesta, cerca di individuare le cause che hanno portato alla guerra fra le poleis unite della Grecia e l'impero persiano ponendosi in una prospettiva storica, utilizzando l'inchiesta e diffidando degli incerti resoconti dei suoi predecessori.
