Hermes (Greek, , ), in Greek mythology, is the Olympian god of boundaries and of the travelers who cross them, of shepherds and cowherds, of orators and wit, of literature and poets, of athletics, of weights and measures, of invention, of commerce in general, and of the cunning of thieves and liars. The Homeric hymn to Hermes invokes him as the one "of many shifts (polytropos), blandly cunning, a robber, a cattle driver, a bringer of dreams, a watcher by night, a thief at the gates, one who was soon to show forth wonderful deeds among the deathless gods."

Hermes (griechisch: Ερμής, ein Stapel Markierersteine, lat. Mercurius / Merkur, auch Ἀργεϊφόντης / Argeiphontes, der "Töter des Argos") ist in der griechischen Mythologie der Götterbote, einerseits der Schutzgott der Wege, des Verkehrs, der Wanderer, der Kaufleute und der Hirten, aber auch andererseits Gott der Diebe, der Kunsthändler, der Redekunst, der Gymnastik und somit auch der Palästra und der Magie. Hermes (gr. ) jest w mitologii greckiej jednym z 12 bogów olimpijskich.  Bóg wędrowców, złodziei i podróżujących. Posłaniec boży. Syn Zeusa i Tytanki Mai, jest bratem Dionizosa, Hefajstosa, Ateny, Afrodyty, Apolla i innych. Patron wędrowców, złodziei, handlu, kupców, oraz posłańców. Urodził się w górach Kyllene w Arkadii, gdzie były główne ośrodki jego kultu. Hymn homerowy do Hermesa opowiada, że jako niemowlę ukradł Apollinowi stado krów, sprytnie myląc ślady. Następnie podarował bratu lirę z jelit cielęcych i skorupy żółwia, czym złagodził gniew Apollina. W zamian otrzymał jako oznakę władzy laskę herolda, zwaną kaduceuszem (kerykejonem), oplecioną dwoma wężami, uśmierzającą spory i kłótnie.

Hermes ( in Greco Ἑρμῆς) nella mitologia greca è il dio dei confini e dei viaggiatori, dei pastori e dei mandriani, degli oratori e dei poeti, della letteratura, dell’atletica, dei pesi e delle misure, del commercio e dell’astuzia caratteristica di ladri e bugiardi.L’Inno omerico ad Hermes lo invoca come : " dalle molte risorse (polùtropos), gentilmente astuto, predone, guida di mandrie, apportatore di sogni, osservatore notturno, ladro ai cancelli, che fece in fretta a mostrare le sue imprese tra le dee immortali". Hermes funge anche da interprete, svolgendo il ruolo di messaggero da parte degli dei presso gli uomini, un compito che divide con Iris. Da Hermes deriva la parola ermeneutica, ovvero l’arte di interpretare i significati nascosti. In greco un uomo fortunato veniva chiamato "hermaion".
