Herman Boerhaave

Herman Boerhaave (Voorhout, December 31, 1668 - Leyden, September 23, 1738) was a Dutch humanist and physician of European fame. He is regarded as the founder of the clinical teaching and of the modern academic hospital. His main achievement was to demonstrate the relation of symptoms to lesions.He was born at Voorhout near Leiden. Entering the University of Leiden he took his degree in philosophy in 1689, with a dissertation De distinctione mentis a corpore (on the difference of the mind from the body), in which he attacked the doctrines of Epicurus, Thomas Hobbes and Spinoza. He then turned to the study of medicine, in which he graduated in 1693 at Harderwijk in present-day Gelderland. In 1701 he was appointed lecturer on the institutes of medicine at Leiden; in his inaugural discourse, De commendando Hippocratis studio, he recommended to his pupils that great physician as their model.

Herman Boerhaave (ur. 31 grudnia 1668 w Voorhout, zm. 23 listopada 1738 w Lejdzie) był holenderskim lekarzem i humanistą o światowej sławie. Uważany jest za założyciela szkoły klinicznej. Stworzył pierwszy akademicki szpital w Lejdzie. Jego głównym osiągnięciem jest rozpoznanie stosunku objawów i przypadłości. Jego uczniami byli m. in. Gerard van Swieten i Albrecht von Haller.

Herman(us) Boerhaave (Voorhout, 31 december 1668 –  Leiden, 23 september 1738) was een Nederlands arts, anatoom, botanicus, scheikundige, humanist en onderzoeker. Hij was een hoogleraar die een tijdlang drie van de vijf leerstoelen van de medische faculteit bekleedde, rector magnificus was van de Universiteit van Leiden en directeur van de Hortus botanicus Leiden; hij stond bekend als begenadigd docent en was een van de bekendste mannen van Europa, wiens faam zelfs tot in China was doorgedrongen.
