Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor

Henry III (29 October 1017 –  5 October 1056), called the Black or the Pious, was a member of the Salian Dynasty of Holy Roman Emperors. He was the eldest son of Conrad II of Germany and Gisela of Swabia and his father made him duke of Bavaria (as Henry VI) in 1026, after the death of Duke Henry V. Then, on Easter Day 1028, his father having been crowned Holy Roman Emperor, Henry was elected and crowned King of Germany in the cathedral of Aachen by Pilgrim, Archbishop of Cologne. After the death of Herman IV, Duke of Swabia in 1038, his father gave him that duchy (as Henry I) as well as the kingdom of Burgundy, which Conrad had inherited in 1033. Upon the death of his father on June 4, 1039, he became sole ruler of the kingdom and was crowned emperor by Pope Clement II in Rome (1046).

Czechy i Węgry stały się odtąd lennem niemieckim.Po podziale Lotaryngii w 1044 doszło do długotrwałych walk między cesarzem a księciem Gotfrydem Brodatym, który otrzymał w lenno tylko Górną Lotaryngię.

Biografia Enrico nacque nel 1017, figlio di Corrado II del Sacro Romano Impero e di Gisella di Svevia. Dal 1027 al 1042 fu duca di Baviera, dal 1038 fino al 1045 duca di Svevia. Il 14 aprile 1028, ad Aquisgrana, il padre lo fece incoronare rex romanorum dall'arcivescovo di Colonia Pellegrino. Nell'autunno del 1038 divenne re di Borgogna, e l'anno dopo successe al padre sul trono imperiale. Nel 1041 sottomise la Boemia, e assoggettò il regno d'Ungheria all'autorità imperiale. Resse il ducato di Carinzia dalla morte del cugino, Corrado II di Carinzia fino al 1047.
