Hemolysis
Hemolysis (or haemolysis)—from the Greek (aima, haema, ) meaning "blood" and (lusis, , ) meaning a "loosing", "setting free" or "releasing"—is the rupturing of erythrocytes (red blood cells) and the release their contents (hemoglobin) into surrounding fluid (e.g., blood plasma). Hemolysis may occur in vivo or in vitro (inside or outside the body).

Hämolyse
Als Hämolyse [] bezeichnet man die Auflösung von Erythrozyten. Man unterscheidet zwischen der physiologischen Hämolyse nach 120 Tagen und der gesteigerten Hämolyse. Die gesteigerte Hämolyse geht mit einer verkürzten Lebensdauer der Erythrozyten einher. Es kommt zu einer Anämie, falls der Abbau der Erythrozyten die kompensatorische Neubildung übersteigt.

L'hémolyse est la destruction des globules rouges (G.R.) libérant l'hémoglobine (Hb) dans le plasma sanguin. À terme apparaît une anémie régénérative.

Hemolys
Hemolys innebär att röda blodkroppar spricker, vilket kan bero på att det kan ha bildats iskristaller i dem eller att ett starkt osmotiskt tryck gör att alltför stora mängder vatten upptas och får cellerna att spricka.

Hemoliza
Hemoliza - przechodzenie hemoglobiny do osocza krwi wywołane zniszczeniem erytrocytów. Hemoliza może być spowodowana np. toksynami bakteryjnymi, jak również może występować w konflikcie serologicznym, oraz chorobach związanych z nieprawidłową budową erytrocytów.
Hemolizę można spowodować również podaniem hipotonicznego płynu (o mniejszym stężeniu) drogą wlewu dożylnego (np. kroplówka). Żeby temu zapobiec, substancje podawane są do organizmu człowieka w roztworze 0,9% NaCl (soli fizjologicznej).
U zwierząt, np. u psów hemoliza może być spowodowana inwazją pasożyta Babesia canis, co pociąga za sobą ostrą odpowiedź autoimmunologiczną organizmu, na skutek wykrycia wewnątrz erytrocytów obcych antygenów.
