Originally a midfielder, Helguera has found his best position as the central defender of Real Madrid. But he continues with his original vision of game, superb passes and ball control, he can carry the ball from danger zone to the rival area with ease. Helguera’s ascent to a regular first-team place was largely responsible of Real Madrid CF’ UCL triumph in 99-00 season. Operating just in front of the defence, he is adept at picking up possession and redistributing it judiciously. He had a spell with AS Roma before joining RCD Espanyol. His impressive displays for the Barcelona club lead to Real signing him in the 1999 summer. He won his first cap against Italy in November 1998, and his excellent form this season led to his recall for the Spain’s recent victory over the Italians.
