Helen Keller

Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880 –  June 1, 1968) was an American author, activist and lecturer. She was the first deafblind person to graduate from college. The story of how a remarkable teacher broke through the isolation the lack of language had imposed on the child, who blossomed as she learned to communicate, are staples of American folklore. What is less well known is how Keller's life developed after she completed her education: she became a radical campaigner for workers' rights and an advocate for many other progressive causes.

Helen Keller Adams (ur. 27 czerwca 1880 w Tuscumbia, Alabama, zm. 1 czerwca 1968 w Westport, Connecticut) – amerykańska głucho-niewidoma pisarka. Mając 19 miesięcy przeszła chorobę, która pozbawiła ją wzroku i słuchu. Kiedy miała 6 lat, jej rodzice poprosili o konsultację Aleksandra Grahama Bella. Ten skontaktował ich z Anną Mansfield Sullivan (później A.M. Macy), która zaczęła kształcić Helen.Pod opieką Sullivan Helen robiła ogromne postępy. Nauczyła się alfabetu Braille'a i studiowała w Horace Mann School for the Deaf (w Bostonie).

Biografia La gioventù Helen Keller nasce in una località chiamata Ivy Green, vicino Tuscumbia (Alabama), dal Capitano Arthur H. Keller e da Kate Adams Keller. Alla tenera età di 19 mesi, si ammala gravemente: i dottori descrivono la malattia come "un acuta congestione dello stomaco e del cervello" (probabilmente scarlattina o meningite). La malattia non dura a lungo, ma la porta alla cecità e sordità totale. Per comunicare con i genitori, la piccola Helen inventa una serie di segni convenzionali (all'età di sette anni, saranno circa 60).
