Hektor

HECToR (High End Computing Terascale Resources) is a £113m supercomputer which is to be installed at University of Edinburgh in Scotland. It is due to come online in October 2007 and is expected to have the performance of 14,000 ordinary PCs. The HECToR service will be run by a consortium including the University, STFC and NAG.

In Greek mythology, Hectōr (, "holding fast"), or Hektōr, is a Trojan prince and one of the greatest fighters in the Trojan War. He is the son of Priam and Hecuba, descendant of Dardanus, ancient king of the Dardanians, who lived under Mount Ida, and of Tros, the founder of Troy. He acts as leader of the Trojans and their allies in the defense of Troy. Hector is one of the Nine Worthies, as he is known not only for his courage, but for his noble nature.

Hektor (griechisch ) ist eine Gestalt aus Homers berühmtem Epos Die Ilias, aus dem viele unserer Informationen über die griechische Mythologie stammen. Er ist vor seinem jüngeren Bruder Paris der älteste Sohn des Königs von Troja, Priamos und dessen Frau Hekabe. Er ist der wichtigste Held und Heerführer Trojas im zehnjährigen Trojanischen Krieg.

Hektor w mitologii greckiej (gr. ) to najdzielniejszy bohater trojański, ulubieniec Apollina, najstarszy syn Priama i Hekaby, brat Parysa i Kasandry, mąż Andromachy. W czasie wojny trojańskiej zabił Patroklosa, który zabrał zbroję Achillesa, po czym w odwecie zginął z jego ręki pod murami Troi. Nawoływania rodziny Hektora do jego powrotu do twierdzy opisuje "Lament Andromachy" autorstwa Homera. Chcąc pomścić śmierć przyjaciela (Patroklosa), Achilles zawlókł ciało Hektora do obozu greckiego i postanowił, że wystawi je niepochowane na żer zwierząt (co było największą karą dla starożytnych). Ponadto przyczepił je do swego rydwanu i codziennie rano przejeżdżał pod murami Troi. Dopiero Priam wybłagał u niego oddanie zwłok. Po pogrzebie Hektora (kremacja) w Troi zarządzono dwunastodniową żałobę.
