Heavy metal umlaut

The heavy metal umlaut, or "rock dots", is an umlaut over letters in the name of a heavy metal band, such as Mötley Crüe or Motörhead. The use of umlauts and other diacritics with a blackletter style typeface is a form of foreign branding intended to give a band's logo a Teutonic quality. It is a form of marketing that evokes stereotypes of boldness and strength commonly attributed to peoples such as the Vikings; author Reebee Garofalo has attributed its use to a desire for a "Gothic horror" feel. The heavy metal umlaut is never referred to by the term diaeresis in this usage, nor is it intended to affect the pronunciation of the band's name, with the exception of Green Jellÿ.

Heavymetalowy umlaut (żartobliwie röck döts) - to dodawany do nazw zespołów heavymetalowych znak przegłosu (umlaut), typowo w postaci dwóch kropek nad samogłoską.Przykładami grup, które używają w nazwach heavymetalowych umlautów są Motörhead, Hüsker Dü, Mägo de Oz czy Mötley Crüe.Użycie kropek i innych znaków diakrytycznych w nazwach zespołów nie oznacza zmiany wymowy tak oznaczonych samogłosek; jest to zabieg wyłącznie graficzny. Wg Reebee Garofalo umlaut budzić ma skojarzenia z dziedzictwem kultury germańskiej i odwoływać się do stereotypów "gotyckiego horroru", siły i potęgi przypisywanej tradycyjnie takim ludom, jak Wikingowie. Co ciekawe, litery oznaczone symbolem umlaut w wielu językach (takich jak niemiecki, szwedzki, turecki, węgierski), gdzie umlaut jest znakiem diakrytycznym, oznacza przednią samogłoskę, która uważana jest za dźwięk słabszy i bardziej miękki niż samogłoska odpowiadająca danej literze bez umlautu. W związku z tym dla osób posługujących się wymienionymi językami nazwa zespołu może się wydawać słabsza - przeciwnie do intencji osób je stosujących.

Lumlaut dell'heavy metal (detto anche röck döts', "puntini del rock") è un umlaut sopra una delle lettere che compongono il nome di un gruppo heavy metal. L'uso di umlaut ed altri segni diacritici, unito ad un set di caratteri gotico ha la funzione di dare al logo del gruppo un aspetto teutonico. È un mezzo del marketing che richiama stereotipi di forza e durezza normalmente attribuiti a popoli come i vichinghi; lo scrittore Reebee Garofalo ne ha attribuito l'utilizzo ad un desiderio di evocare un "orrore gotico". In questi casi non ci si riferisce mai all'umlaut dell'heavy metal con il termine dieresi, e non ha la funzione di modificare la pronuncia del nome del gruppo.
