The album featured several high calibre guests, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and James Taylor. Harvest hit #1 on the Billboard Music Charts (North America) pop albums chart, spawning two hit singles, "Old Man," which peaked at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Heart of Gold," which peaked at #1.

Harvest è un album di Neil Young pubblicato nel 1972.Bestseller nell'anno di pubblicazione, vanta la partecipazione di ospiti di grande levatura, tra cui la London Symphony Orchestra, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash e James Taylor. Harvest fu anche numero 1 nella classifica di Billboard (Nord America) per gli album pop.Neil Young aveva reclutato un nuovo gruppo di musicisti country, gruppo che battezzò The Stray Gators e aveva registrato un lavoro interamente country. Prevedendo in un certo senso la moda che di lì a poco avrebbe promosso a "superstar" gruppi come gli Eagles. Harvest fu un grande successo, da cui fu ricavato un singolo di successo, numero uno negli Stati Uniti: Heart Of Gold. Le altre canzoni ritornavano ad alcuni dei temi cari a Young: Alabama era un rifacimento di Southern Man; Words consisteva in un lungo dialogo della chitarra con il resto della band e The Needle and the Damage Done narrava la fine di Danny Whitten nella dipendenza dall'eroina.
