Haridwar

Haridwar (also spelled Hardwar, Hindi: हरिद्वार) ) is a holy city and municipal board in the Haridwar District of Uttarakhand, India. In Hindi, Haridwar stands for Gateway to God, with 'Hari' meaning god and 'dwar' meaning gate. Haridwar is regarded as one of the seven holiest places to Hindus.According to Hindu mythology, Haridwar is one among the four sites where drops of the elixir of immortality, Amrita, accidentally spilled over from the pitcher, in which it was being carried away by the celestial bird Garuda. These four spots -- Ujjain, Haridwar, Nasik, and Allahabad -- have today become places, where the Kumbha Mela is celebrated once every 3 years in any of these 4 places and after a period of 12 years, the Maha Kumbha Mela is celebrated on the 12th year at Prayag in Allahabad. Millions of pilgrims, devotees, and tourists congregate here from all over the world to celebrate the event. They perform ritualistic bathing on the banks of the river Ganga.

Haridwar est une ville indienne, capitale du district de l'Haridwar dans l'état de l'Uttarakhand avec un population de 190 000 habitants. C'est une des sept villes saintes de l'hindouisme. Son nom signifie Porte de Hari, un des noms de Vishnu. C'est ici que le Gange surgit de l'Himalaya pour couler dans les plaines. Haridwar (Hindi: हरिद्वार, ; auch Hardwar) ist eine Stadt im Bundesstaat Uttarakhand im Norden von Indien mit 190.000 Einwohnern in einer Höhe von Im Hinduismus ist sie eine bekannte Pilgerstätte und gilt als eine der sieben heiligen Stätten am Ganges. Alle 12 Jahre findet hier an den Ufern des für Hindus heiligen Flusses Ganges eine Kumbh Mela statt, zu der Millionen von Pilgern erwartet werden. Die nächste ist im März - April 2010. Hauptzielpunkt der Pilger ist der Hari-ki-Pauri. Im Brahmakund fließen nach Vorstellung der Gläubigen die himmlischen Wasser in den Ganges. Ein Tempel hier soll den Fußabdruck Vishnus enthalten. Der Ort ist deshalb bedeutsam, weil hier der Eintritt des Ganges in die Ebene gesehen wird.

Haridwar (hindi हरिद्वार, trl. Haridvār, trb. Haridwar; ang. Haridwar) - miasto w Indiach (stan Uttarakhand), u podnóża Himalajów, nad rzeką Ganges.Liczba ludności wynosi ok. 229 tys. mieszkańców (stan z 2003 roku). Miasto jest miejscem pielgrzymek Hindusów do świętej rzeki Ganges (pielgrzymi przybywają tu przez cały rok, by dokonać rytualnej ablucji). Wyjątkowość tego miasta polega na tym, że w tym miejscu Ganges kończy swój górski bieg i wpływa na równiny. Na rzece znajduje się elektrownia wodna. Swój początek bierze tu Kanał Górnego Gangesu.
