Harakat

In the Arabic script, (حركات — the singular is حركة) are the diacritic marks used to represent vowel sounds. The literal meaning of is "movements", e.g. in the context of moving air waves that we produce while pronouncing vowels. The Arabic script is an Impure abjad rather than an alphabet, meaning that all the consonant sounds are represented by letters but short vowel sounds are often not represented in writing. The are optional symbols that can be used to represent all the vowels that are not indicated in the ordinary spelling.

Tel qu'écrit couramment, l'alphabet arabe n'utilise pour ainsi dire pas de diacritiques, outre le point souscrit ou suscrit obligatoire pour distinguer des lettres ambigües.

Харака́т ( «движения», ед.ч. ха́рака) — система надстрочных и подстрочных диакритических знаков, используемых в арабском письме для обозначения кратких гласных звуков и других особенностей произношения слова, не отображаемых буквами (харфами). Огласовку текста при помощи этих знаков называют ташки́ль . Поскольку харфами обозначаются только согласные и долгие гласные (матрес лекционис), то неогласованный текст невозможно «читать вслух»: можно лишь «угадывать произношение» записанных в нём слов. Текст с харакатом, напротив, содержит всю необходимую для его прочтения информацию.
