Hanif

(Arabic , plural حنفاء) is an Arabic term that refers to pre-Islamic non-Jewish or non-Christian monotheists. More specifically in Islamic thought it refers to the Arabs during the (pre-Islamic) period known as the Jāhiliyya or "Ignorance", who were seen to have rejected Shirk (polytheism) and retained some or all of the true tenets of the monotheist religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) that, according to Islamic view, has preceded Judaism and Christianity.

L’adjectif hanîf (arabe : [ḥanīf], vrai croyant, pl. [ḥunafā']) désigne les monothéistes arabes avant l’Islam. Ensuite cela qualifie les «vrais croyants». Le mot viendrait du sabéen et signifie pèlerin. Das arabische Wort Hanif, Plural Hunafa' bezeichnet vorislamische Monotheisten, die weder Juden noch Christen waren. Diese religiöse Strömung auf der Arabischen Halbinsel nennt man im islamischen Schrifttum . Das arabische Verb aus der Wurzel ḥ-n-f taḥannafa bedeutet je nach Zusammenhang a) „Hanif werden“, d. h. der Hanifiya, der Religion Abrahams folgen – so in den Erläuterungen von  Ibn Hadschar al-'Asqalani, b) den Islam annehmen. In diesem Sinne wird der Begriff in Sure 22, 31 hunafa' li-llahi verwendet: „als Gott ergebene Hanife“, die dem einzigen Gott nichts beigesellen. In theologischen Schriften wird hanif und al-hanifiya oft als Synonym zu Muslim bzw. zu Islam verwendet.

Het bijvoeglijke naamwoord hânif betekent ware gelovige. Hiermee worden zij aangeduid die al voor het ontstaan van de islam een monotheïstisch geloof aanhingen. De Koran noemt Abraham een hânif (meervoud: hoenafa), maar ook Adam en Jezus zijn volgens de islam hoenafa. Kenmerk van een hânif is het veroordelen de heidense, religieuze praktijken, zonder joods of christelijk te zijn.
