Handel

HANDEL was the code-name for the UK's National Attack Warning System in the Cold War. It consisted of a small console consisting of two microphones, lights and gauges. The reason behind this was to provide a back-up if anything failed. If an enemy air strike was detected, a key on the left hand side of the console would be turned and two lights would come on. Then the operator would press & hold down a red button and give the message: "ATTACK WARNING RED! ATTACK WARNING RED!The message would be sent to the police by the telephone lines used for the speaking clock, who would in turn activate the air attack sirens using the local telephone lines. The rationale was to kill two birds with one stone, as it reduced running costs (it would most likely be used only once in its working life) and the telephone lines were under constant test by sharing with a public service. That means a fault could be detected in time to give a warning.

George Frideric Handel (Friday 23 February 1685 – Saturday 14 April 1759) was a German-born British Baroque composer  who was a leading composer of concerti grossi, operas and oratorios. Born in Halle as Georg Friedrich Händel , he dwelt during most of his adult life in England, becoming a subject of the British crown on 22 January 1727. His most famous works are Messiah, an oratorio set to texts from the King James Bible, Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks. Drawing on the techniques of the great composers of the Italian Baroque, as well as the music of Henry Purcell, he deeply influenced in his turn many composers who came after him, including Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and his work helped lead the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era.

Georg Friedrich Händel (* 23. Februar 1685 in Halle (Saale); † 14. April 1759 in London) war ein deutsch-englischer Komponist im Zeitalter der Aufklärung, der vor allem durch seine zahlreichen Opern und Oratorien zu großer Berühmtheit gelangte. Zu seinem Hauptwerk zählen rund 40 Opern und 25 Oratorien, darunter auch das Oratorium The Messiah (Der Messias) mit dem weltberühmten Halleluja-Chor. Händel hat in allen musikalischen Gattungen seiner Zeit Kompositionen hinterlassen.

Jerzy Fryderyk Händel (Haendel) (ur. 23 lutego 1685 w Halle, zm. 14 kwietnia 1759 w Londynie) – niemiecki kompozytor i organista. Ze względu na to, że długie lata przebywał i pracował w Londynie, gdzie był znany pod nazwiskiem George Frideric Haendel, uważany jest niekiedy za kompozytora angielskiego. W 1727 roku przyjął obywatelstwo brytyjskie.

La tendenza prevalente in Italia oggi è quella di scrivere e pronunciare il suo nome alla tedesca ("Georg Friedrich Händel" o "Hændel"), sebbene il compositore negli ultimi quaranta anni della sua vita si sia sempre firmato all'inglese "George Frideric Handel". Durante il suo soggiorno italiano veniva chiamato invece "Hendel".
