Han (Japan)

The were the fiefs of feudal lords of Japan that were created by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and existed until their abolition in 1871, three years after the Meiji Restoration. The number of han varied; typically, there were around 300 han in the Edo period. Most were led by a daimyo whose territory had an agricultural assessment of 10,000 koku or more. The daimyo swore loyalty to the shogun. Sometimes a powerful daimyo let a man govern a domain over 10,000 koku. Those men were not daimyo but their domains were sometimes called han. The richest han was the Kaga Domain with 1 million koku. It was situated in Kaga, Etchu and Notu provinces.

Ce système fut créé par Toyotomi Hideyoshi et a existé jusqu'à son abolition en 1871, trois ans après la restauration de l'ère Meiji. Le nombre de han varia ; il y en avait approximativement 300 durant la période Edo. La plupart étaient dirigés par un daimyo avec un territoire correspondant à 10 000 koku ou plus. Le daimyo jurait fidélité au shogun. Parfois, un daimyo puissant laissait un homme gouverner un domaine de plus de 10 000 koku. Ces hommes n'étaient pas des daimyos mais leur domaine était appelé han.

Ein Han (jap. 藩 han; in westlicher Literatur gelegentlich auch Daimyat) war ein Typ Lehen, das der Shōgun an einen Daimyō vergeben hatte. Nur Lehen, die einen Ertrag von mindestens 10.000 koku Reis einbrachten, wurden als han bezeichnet, und auch nur deren Herren galten als Daimyō. Das System der Han wurde von Toyotomi Hideyoshi nach seiner Einigung des Reiches geschaffen. Am 14. Juli 1871 wurden die Han während der Meiji-Restauration abgeschafft, und die meisten direkt in Präfekturen umgewandelt.
