A hammermill is essentially a steel drum containing a vertical or horizontal cross-shaped rotor on which pivoting hammers are mounted. The hammers are free to swing on the ends of the cross. The rotor is spun at a high speed inside the drum while material is fed into a feed hopper. The material is impacted by the hammers on the ends of the rotating cross and thereby is shredded and expelled through screens in the drum.

Een hamermolen (ook wel mokermolen) is een machine die uitermate geschikt is om plakkerige en clustervormende materialen tot kleinere deeltjes te vermalen. Het verkleinen van materiaaldeeltjes wordt gedaan door het aangevoerde materiaal te onderwerpen aan snel ronddraaiende hamers. De hamermolen is oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld voor de deeltjesverkleining van mineralen, maar kent intussen een breed scala aan toepassingen. Zo wordt het onder meer gebruikt bij het vermalen van graan, en bevindt zich een hamermolen in een autoversnipperaar voor het recyclen van autowrakken.
