Halle, Saxony-Anhalt

Halle (also called Halle an der Saale (literally "Halle on the Saale", and in some historic references is not uncommonly called Saale after the river) in order to distinguish it from Halle in North Rhine-Westphalia) is the largest city in the German State of Saxony-Anhalt. It is situated in the southern part of the state, along the river Saale which drains the surrounding plains and the greater part of the neighboring Free State of Thuringia located just to its south, and the Thuringian basin, northwards from the Thuringer Wald.

Halle est une ville d'Allemagne, située dans le land de Saxe-Anhalt sur la Saale. Elle se trouve dans l'est du pays, entre les contreforts du Harz et la plaine germano-polonaise. En 806, une forteresse fut érigée à l'emplacement de la ville actuelle pour protéger les nombreux gisements de sel que compte la région et qui donnèrent leur nom à la ville, "hall" signifiant le sel en vieux celtique.

Halle (Saale) ist eine Stadt in Mitteldeutschland. Mit etwa 232.000 Einwohnern ist sie die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt sowie eines von drei Oberzentren des Bundeslandes Sachsen-Anhalt. Sie hat den Status einer kreisfreien Stadt. Außerdem ist Halle Bestandteil der „Metropolregion Sachsendreieck“. Nächste größere Städte sind Leipzig, etwa 30 km südöstlich,  Berlin, etwa 130 km nordöstlich und  Dresden, etwa 150 km südöstlich.
