For the military actions during the Crusader era, see Battle of Homs Homs (, , anciently called "Emese", or "La Chamelle" during the Crusades) is a western city in Syria and the capital of the Homs Governorate. It is 450 m above sea level, and is located 160 km away from Damascus and 190 km away from Aleppo. It is located on the Orontes river. It is also the central link between the interior cities and the Mediterranean Sea coast. The city dates back to 2300 BC. In Roman times it was known as Emesa. The famous Crac des Chevaliers is built on the mountain overlooking the Homs Gap. It is also home to the Tomb of Khalid bin Walid, a famous and celebrated Arab Muslim Warrior. The 2002 population estimate of the city is 1,033,000.

Homs (en arabe : ḥimṣ, ; en turc : Humus ; appelée Émese dans l'antiquité, en latin : Emesa ; en grec : ) est une ville et un centre industriel et économique syrien de haute importance. Sa situation géographique au centre du pays ainsi que les frontières de son district qui touchent le Liban et l'Irak expliquent cette importance. La ville compte actuellement un million d'habitants. Il s'agit d'un centre qui était, il y a quelques années encore, sans aucune importance touristique, à l'exception des chefs lieux comme Palmyre ou le Krak des Chevaliers. Mais les découvertes archéologiques extraordinaires de la ville antique de Qatna (deuxième millénaire av. J.-C.) peuvent redonner à la ville de Homs une situation touristique plus intéressante.

Homs (in arabo, حمص, Hims, popolazione 700.000 abitanti) è un'antica città della Siria, risalente al 2300 a.C. circa, e che in epoca romana era nota come Emesa. Il suo monumento più importante è la tomba di Khālid ibn al-Walīd, il noto guerriero vissuto nel primo periodo islamico, conquistatore della Siria e vincitore dei Lakhmidi di al-Hīra. Nell'area si erge tuttavia il manufatto più noto al mondo: il Krak dei Cavalieri (Fortezza dei cavalieri), sito a 65 Km a ovest di Homs, che fu per quasi due secoli il più potente baluardo dei Crociati, controllato dall'Ordine dei Cavalieri dell'Ospedale fino alla sua riconquista da parte del Sultano mamelucco Baybars l' 8 aprile del 1271.
