HD DVD (short for High-Definition/Density DVD) is a discontinued high-density optical disc format for storing data and high-definition video. Supported principally by Toshiba, HD DVD was envisioned to be the successor to the standard DVD format. However, in February 2008, after a protracted high definition optical disc format war with rival Blu-ray Disc, Toshiba abandoned the format, announcing it would no longer develop or manufacture HD DVD players or drives. However, the HD DVD physical disc specifications (but not the codecs) are still in use as the basis for the CBHD (China Blue High-Definition Disc) formerly called CH-DVD. The HD DVD Promotion Group was dissolved on March 28, 2008.

Die HD DVD (High Density Digital Versatile Disc, zuvor: Advanced Optical Disc, kurz: AOD) ist ein Datenträgerformat und wurde zwischen 2005 und Februar 2008 neben Blu-ray Disc und VMD als ein mögliches Nachfolgeformat der DVD gehandelt.

HD DVD est à la fois un support de vidéo numérique et un sigle de l’abréviation du terme anglais  traduit en français comme disque numérique polyvalent de haute densité. Tout comme pour le CD et le DVD, les données sont stockées sous forme numérique, sur un disque de de diamètre. Le « HD » du nom fait également référence à la Haute définition, les films stockés sur ces disques pouvant effectivement être en HD.

HD DVD eller High-Definition/Density Digital Versatile Disc var ett hög-densitetskivformat utvecklat av Toshiba med syfte att lagra stora mängder data, inklusive HD-film. Det kallades för nästa generationens dvd. De första officiella HD DVD-filmerna släpptes i slutet av april 2006 i USA. Toshiba lät den 19 februari 2008 meddela att all utveckling, försäljning och marknadsföring av formatet läggs ner, detta som en följd av att allt fler bolag valt att ge sitt stöd till konkurrenten Blu-ray.

HD DVD (z ang. High Definition DVD) – format zapisu optycznego danych, opracowany przez firmy Toshiba, NEC i Memory-Tech zrzeszone w organizację AOSRA. Podobny do płyt DVD, jednak znacznie bardziej pojemny, gdyż dzięki zastosowaniu niebieskiego lasera udało się znacznie zwiększyć gęstość upakowania danych.
