Guwahati

Guwahati is a major city in eastern India, often considered as the gateway to the North-East Region (NER) of the country and is the largest city within the region.  Dispur, the capital of the Indian state of Assam is situated within the city. Guwahati is one of the most rapidly growing cities in India. During past few decades it has experienced unprecedented spatial expansion and also steep rise in population. Today, the city straddles between the LGB International Airport in the west to Narengi in the east for almost 45 kilometres and between the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river and the foothills of the Shillong plateau for around 15 kilometres. Moreover, the city is also getting gradually expanded to the northern bank of Brahmaputra. Guwahati with population just 0.2 million in 1971 is a million plus city today. Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), the city's local government covers an area of 216 km², while Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the planning and development authority covers an area of 340 km².

Guwahati (Assamais: গুৱাহাটী, Hindi: गुवाहाटी) antérieurement Gauhatî, — du sanskrit, guwa, « noix d'arec » et « haat », « le marché » — est la plus importante ville de l'Assam, État indien situé au nord-est du pays. La ville sert aussi de centre culturel, capitale politique et commercial pour la région. Elle se situe entre le banc sud du Brahmapoutre et des collines du plateau de Shillong, situé au pied de l'Himalaya. Elle est considérée traditionnellement comme le lieu de naissance du dieu Kâma. La capitale de l'état Dispur, n'est qu'une de ses banlieues.

Gauhati (Bengalisch: গৌহাটি, Gauhāṭi; Asamiya/Bishnupriya Manipuri: গূৱাহাটি/গুৱাহাটি, Gūvāhāṭi/Guvāhāṭi, Guvahati; englisch: Guwahati) ist eine Stadt im indischen Bundesstaat Assam am südlichen Ufer des Brahmaputra. Mit 915.002 Einwohnern ist sie die mit Abstand größte Ansiedlung im Nordosten Indiens.

Guwahati, soms ook Gauhati (Assamees: গুৱাহাটী, Bengaals: গৌহাটি) is de grootste stad van de Indiase staat Assam, in het noordoosten van India. De stad is gelegen in het district Kamrup Metropolitan en heeft 808.021 inwoners (2001). De plaats Dispur, ongeveer 10 km ten zuiden van de binnenstad, is een deel van de gemeente Guwahati en fungeert als hoofdstad van de staat Assam.
