Gulf of Suez

The northern end of the Red Sea is bifurcated by the Sinai Peninsula, creating the Gulf of Suez (Arabic: خليج السويس; transliterated: Khalyj as-Suways) in the west and the Gulf of Aqaba to the east. The Gulf of Suez is a relatively young rift basin, dating back 40 million years. [1] It stretches some 30000 km north by northwest, terminating at the Egyptian city of Suez and the entrance to the Suez Canal. Along the mid-line of the Gulf lies the border between the continents of Africa and Asia. [2] The entrance of the Gulf lies atop the mature Gemsa oil and gas field. [3]

Le golfe de Suez (en arabe ) est la frontière naturelle occidentale de la péninsule de Sinaï, à l’extrémité nord de la mer Rouge. C’est un bassin relativement jeune remontant à 40 millions d'années. Il s’étire jusqu’à environ 175 milles en direction nord-est, se terminant à la ville égyptienne de Suez et à l'entrée du canal de Suez. Au milieu du golfe se trouve la frontière entre l'Afrique et l'Asie. À son embouchure, on trouve du pétrole et du gaz naturel, notamment le gisement de Gemsa. Ces hydrocarbures sont exploités depuis 1910.

Der Golf von Sues ist der westliche Teil vom nördlichen Ende des Roten Meeres. Im Osten liegt der Golf von Akaba. Der Golf von Sues ist mit 40 Millionen Jahren eine relativ junge Riftzone und erstreckt sich ungefähr 280 Kilometer von Nord nach Nordost bis nach Sues am Eingang des Sueskanals. Entlang der mittigen Linie durch den Golf liegt die Grenze zwischen Afrika und Asien.

В северной части залива находится египетский город Суэц, у которого начинается Суэцкий канал, который связывает Красное море со Средиземным.
