Stack-smashing protection refers to various techniques for detecting buffer overflows on stack-allocated variables as they occur and preventing them from becoming serious security vulnerabilities. There have been several implementations of stack-smashing protection, two of the most common being StackGuard, and SSP (also known as ProPolice).
