Guarani

Guaraní (Guarani, in Brazilian Portuguese) is the name for a group of culturally related indigenous peoples of South America, distinguished from the related Tupi by their use of the Guaraní language. The traditional range of the Guaraní people is between the Uruguay River and lower Paraguay River in what is now Paraguay, the Corrientes and Entre Rios Provinces of Argentina, southern Brazil and parts of Uruguay and Bolivia. There are contemporary Guaraní populations in these areas, though their demographic dominance of the region has been reduced by European colonisation and the commensurate rise of the mestizo. Nevertheless, the Guaraní language is still widely spoken across traditional Guaraní homelands, most notably in Paraguay where it is used amongst all classes and ethnic groups as a symbol of national distinctiveness, and is an official language.

Die Guaraní sind ein indianisches Volk, das bereits in präkolumbischer Zeit als Ackerbauern im mittleren Südamerika siedelte und somit zu den indigenen Völkern Südamerikas zählt. Ihre Siedlungsgebiete gehören heute zu Paraguay, Bolivien, Argentinien, Brasilien und Uruguay. In Paraguay stellen sie heute ca. 1% der Bevölkerung. Ihre Sprache wird jedoch von über 80% der Paraguayer gesprochen und ist als zweite offizielle Sprache des Landes anerkannt. Auch die Währung Paraguays heißt Guaraní.Bereits der erste spanische Gouverneur Paraguays förderte offiziell die Vermischung der spanischen Kolonisten mit den Ureinwohnern, ein Anliegen, das auch von späteren Herrschern immer wieder aufgenommen wurde. Viele Paraguayer haben deshalb auch Guarani-Vorfahren, obwohl sie offiziell nicht diesem Volk zugerechnet werden.

Guarani - Indianie Ameryki Południowej. Mówią językiem z rodziny guarani. Zajmują się myślistwem i rybołówstwem, żyją w rezerwatach w Brazylii w stanach Paraná, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, na wschodzie Paragwaju oraz w argentyńskiej prowincji Misiones. Żyją we wspólnotach o patrylinearnym systemie pokrewieństwa. Ich populację szacuje się na około 7000 osób (1983).W 2000 roku w Paragwaju ok. 50 tys. osób posługiwało się wyłącznie językiem guarani. Według różnych źródeł, język ten zna od 4 do 7 mln. osób (nie tylko Indian) z Paragwaju i krajów sąsiednich.
