Greeks

The Greeks (, ) are a nation and ethnic group who have populated Greece and the area of the Aegean Sea for over 4,000 years. Today they are primarily found in the Balkan peninsula of southeastern Europe, the Greek islands, Cyprus, and throughout the world as part of the Greek diaspora.Ancient Greek colonies and communities were established throughout the Mediterranean, including southern Italy, Marseilles, and Barcelona, but Greek people have always concentrated around the Aegean coasts, where the Greek language has been spoken since antiquity. The Mycenaeans were the first historical people to arrive in the area now referred to as 'Greece'. According to Thucydides, the name of Hellas spread from a valley in Thessaly to all Greek-speaking peoples through Homer's works.

Die Griechen (v. lat. Graeci, Bezeichnung für die Griechisch sprechenden Völker der Antike, etymologische Herkunft nicht sicher geklärt; ) sind ein indoeuropäisches Volk, dessen sprachliche Wurzeln sich bis ins zweite vorchristliche Jahrtausend zurückverfolgen lassen. Heute leben über 11 Millionen Griechen in Griechenland und auf Zypern; ca. 5 Mio. Menschen außerhalb Griechenlands und Zyperns bezeichnen sich ebenfalls als Griechen.

In lingua italiana la parola greci è abbastanza ambigua.Greci son detti i pelasgi quelle popolazioni che occuparono la Grecia prima dell'arrivo delle genti elleniche e dei dori (da alcuni considerati "elleni").Discendenti di questi popoli si trovano ora principalmente nelle isole greche e a Cipro.Greci sono detti anche, in alcune lingue europee, gli abitanti dell'odierna Grecia, o "Hellas", sebbene essi stessi si definiscano "elleni": rifiutano l'appellativo "greco" preferendo il lemma "ellinas", proposto anche in ambito europeo.Nelle lingue del vicino Oriente invece ci si riferisce alla Grecia come Ionia.Secondo Aristotele, graekoi erano l'antica tribù Achea dei Beozi a nord dell'Attica.Nel periodo dell'impero romano il termine greci fu adottato per indicare tutte le popolazioni della stessa area culturale e linguistica, a causa dell'immigrazione massiccia dei pacifici Beozi a Roma, scribi ed eruditi che insegnarono ai giovani romani, l'ellenico, che rimase per secoli lingua franca.

Een andere naam voor de Grieken in de oudheid is Hellenen of oude Grieken.De Grieken zijn een Indo-Europees volk dat in het tweede millennium v.Chr. vanuit midden-Europa naar het Helleense schiereiland trok. In verschillende golven, Myceners, Ioniërs en Doriërs, bezetten ze deze streken waarbij ze gedeeltelijk de oorspronkelijke bevolking opnamen in hun stammen. De oude Grieken waren onderling zeer verscheiden op vlak van politiek, maar religie, kunst, taal en traditie waren bindende factoren tussen de verschillende gebieden
