Greek alphabet

The Greek alphabet is an alphabet consisting of 24 letters that has been used to write the Greek language since the late 8th or early 8th century BC. It was the first alphabet in the narrow sense, that is, a writing system using a separate symbol for each vowel and consonant. It is the oldest alphabetic script in continuous use today. The letters were also used to represent Greek numerals (numbers), beginning in the 2nd century BC.

L’alphabet grec a été créé sur le modèle de l’alphabet phénicien. L’alphabet grec tel qu’on le lit actuellement est le résultat de plusieurs siècles d’évolution, au cours desquels les minuscules ont été créées (c’est donc un alphabet bicaméral) et les diacritiques ajoutés. Suite aux conquêtes d’Alexandre le Grand, la culture et l’écriture grecques se répandirent dans une grande partie du bassin méditerranéen. Par exemple, en Égypte, le brassage culturel amena la création de l’écriture copte, inspirée du grec oncial, et complétée par six lettres originales tirées des hiéroglyphes démotiques. Il est encore utilisé de nos jours, à peine simplifié, en Grèce.

Das griechische Alphabet (neugriechisch , ) ist die Schrift, in der die griechische Sprache seit dem 9. Jahrhundert v. Chr. geschrieben wird. Die griechische Schrift ist eine Weiterentwicklung des  phönizischen Alphabets. Sie war die erste Alphabetschrift im engeren Sinne. Vom griechischen Alphabet stammen u. a. das  lateinische und kyrillische Alphabet ab. Das griechische Alphabet umfasst heute 24 Buchstaben, die ebenso wie im lateinischen Alphabet als Majuskeln (Großbuchstaben) und Minuskeln (Kleinbuchstaben) vorkommen.

Alfabet grecki – powstały ok. IX w. p.n.e. alfabet służący do zapisu języka greckiego i języków kilku ludów znajdujących się pod wpływem kultury greckiej. Jego znaki służyły Grekom także do zapisu liczb. We wczesnej starożytności istniało wiele form alfabetu greckiego, wypartych w okresie klasycznym przez formę jońską (zachodnią), której w niezmienionej postaci używa się do dziś do zapisu języka nowogreckiego.

L'alfabeto greco è usato nella lingua greca e risale al IX secolo a.C.; l'alphabetos derivava dalla scrittura alfabetica dei Fenici, i quali ad ogni segno associavano un solo suono. Dal momento che la scrittura fenicia era di tipo "appercettivo", ovvero venivano indicate solo le consonanti che dovevano poi essere integrate da suoni vocalici non specificati, (e quindi solo un fenicio era in grado di leggere una parola scritta in fenicio) i greci dovettero trasformare alcune lettere fenicie non usate nel loro alfabeto per indicare i suoni vocalici, che nell'alfabeto greco sono basilari tanto per una questione metrica quanto per il problema della flessione delle parole e degli articoli.
