Greatest Hits

A greatest hits album (sometimes referred to as a "best of" album) is a compilation album of successful, previously released songs by a particular music artist or band. To increase the appeal of the album – especially to people who already own the previously released material – it is common to include  remixes of popular songs or new material, with new songs often being released as singles (and themselves sometimes becoming successful).

Greatest Hits! was the first compilation album released by British rock group the Kinks in 1966. The album consists of some of the most popular singles and songs released by the Kinks since 1964. Interestingly, the 1965 single "See My Friends" was not included on the album, despite reaching #10 on the UK charts.

Greatest Hits oder Best of wird ein Musikalbum (LP oder Audio-CD) genannt, das von dem betreffenden Interpreten die größten Hits – oft solche Titel, die als  Single erschienen und sich in den jeweiligen Single-Charts auch entsprechend platzieren konnten – enthält.Noch in den 1980er Jahren kamen diese Art von Alben vornehmlich dann auf den Markt, wenn sich eine Musikband getrennt oder sich ein Einzelinterpret aus dem „aktiven Geschäft“ zurückgezogen hatte. Heutzutage werden jedoch auch Alben mit diesem Namen veröffentlicht, obwohl die vorgenannten Kriterien nicht zutreffen. Greatest-Hits-Alben erscheinen oft zu Weihnachten.

Greatest hits (letteralmente I più grandi successi) è un'espressione inglese solitamente utilizzata come titolo per raccolte di successi di cantanti o gruppi musicali.Tipicamente il greatest hits è per un artista o per un gruppo un momento importante e significativo della carriera. Può essere una sorta di summa di una particolare fase artistica, così come può derivare dalla necessità di un rilancio commerciale. Alcuni gruppi e artisti hanno potuto realizzarne più di uno nel corso della carriera.
