The Great Northern War (1700–21) was a conflict in which a coalition led by the Tsardom of Russia successfully contested the supremacy of the Swedish Empire in northern Central Europe and Eastern Europe. The initial leaders of the anti-Swedish alliance were Peter I the Great of Russia, Frederick IV of Denmark–Norway and August II the Strong of Saxe-Poland-Lithuania. Frederik IV and August II were forced out of the alliance in 1700 and 1706 respectively, but re-joined it in 1709. George I of Brunswick-Lüneburg (Hanover) joined the coalition in 1714 for Hanover and in 1717 for Britain, and Frederick William I of Brandenburg-Prussia joined it in 1715.

Der Große Nordische Krieg war ein in Nord-, Mittel- und Osteuropa geführter Krieg um die Vorherrschaft im Ostseeraum in den Jahren 1700 bis 1721.

Stora nordiska kriget är det krig som fördes i norra och östra Europa 1700-1721 mellan å ena sidan Sverige, Holstein-Gottorp och 1710-1713 även Osmanska riket och å andra sidan en koalition bestående av Sachsen-Polen, Danmark-Norge och Ryssland (från 1715 även Preussen och Hannover). Kriget avslutades med freden i Nystad 1721.

III wojna północna (wielka wojna północna) toczyła się w latach 1700-1721 pomiędzy Danią, Rosją, Saksonią, Prusami i Hanowerem (od 1715) z jednej strony a Szwecją z drugiej. Rzeczpospolita formalnie pozostawała neutralna aż do roku 1704, ale znaczna część walk toczyła się na jej terytorium i jej kosztem. Zakończyła się podpisaniem pokoju w Nystad, w wyniku którego wzrosło znaczenie Rosji, a Szwecja utraciła status europejskiego mocarstwa.
