Gotland

is a county, province and municipality of Sweden and the largest island in the Baltic Sea. At 3,140 square kilometers in area, it makes up less than one percent of Sweden's total land area. The region also includes the small islands of Fårö and Gotska Sandön to the north, and the tiny Karlsö Islands to the west. Inhabitants number 57,600 (2004 figure), with about 22,600 living in the primary city Visby. The main sources of income to the island are tourism and agriculture.

Gotland ist eine schwedische Insel und historische Provinz. Sie ist die zweitgrößte Insel der Ostsee nach Seeland (Dänemark) und vor Saaremaa (Estland) und liegt nordöstlich von Öland. Ihren Namen hat sie vom Germanenstamm der Goten, die die Insel laut der Gutasaga um die Zeitenwende zumindest teilweise verließen, um auf dem Kontinent, später als Ost- und Westgoten, große Reiche im mediterranen Raum zu errichten.

Gotland è la seconda isola più grande del mar Baltico (dopo la danese Sjælland e prima dell'estone Saaremaa). È situata a nord ovest di Öland e fa parte della Svezia.Da un punto di vista amministrativo l'isola costituisce una contea, la contea di Gotland, è inoltre una delle province tradizionali della Svezia, della provincia fanno parte anche le isole di Fårö, l'arcipelago di Karlsö (Stora Karlsö e Lilla Karlsö) e Gotska Sandön, una parco naturale. Il nome latino di Gotland usato talvolta ancor'oggi è Gotlandia.
