Gothic metal or goth metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that combines the heaviness of doom metal with the dark melancholy of gothic rock. The music of gothic metal is diverse with bands known to adopt the gothic approach to different styles of heavy metal music. The genre originated during the early 1990s in Europe originally as an outgrowth of death/doom, a fusion of death metal and doom metal. Lyrics are generally melodramatic and mournful with inspiration from gothic fiction as well as personal experiences.

Gothic Metal [] ist ein Musikstil, der in der ersten Hälfte der 1990er Jahre durch eine wechselseitige Beeinflussung der Genres Metal und Gothic Rock entstanden ist. Die Initiatoren des Genres wurzeln jedoch hauptsächlich im Metal-Umfeld. Hierbei bleibt Gothic Metal eine schwammige Stilbezeichnung, da die Ausdrucksformen vielseitig sind. Dies äußert sich besonders dadurch, dass einige Vertreter des Genres stilistisch eher zum Gothic Rock neigen, während bei anderen Künstlern hingegen der Metal-Anteil (bspw. das Growling) überwiegt.

Le gothic metal (aussi appelé goth metal ou metal gothique) est un genre musical se trouvant à la croisée du Doom-Death, du heavy metal et de la musique gothique. Il s'est développé au début des années 1990 en Europe et aux États-Unis. Il y a beaucoup de confusions et d'amalgames concernant la définition du gothic metal. Déjà il est très fréquent que le metal d'une façon générale soit confondu avec la musique gothique dans l'esprit du grand public. Gothic metal är en melodisk och atmosfärisk subgenre till metal utvecklad ur death/doom. Vanlig sättning är trummor, elgitarr, elbas, synth och både kvinnlig och manlig sång. Den kvinnliga vokalisten har ofta en ljus, vacker sopranstämma, medan den manliga antingen kan growla eller sjunga klarsång, eller både och. Låttexterna är ofta sorgliga och väldigt dramatiska.

Gothic metal (pol. metal gotycki) jest rodzajem muzyki metalowej. Za pierwszą płytę definiującą gatunek uznaje się album Paradise Lost "Gothic". Charakterystyczną cechą metalu gotyckiego jest pompatyczny śpiew, smutny oraz melancholijny nastrój utworów. Teksty piosenek są zazwyczaj lirykami dotyczącymi świata fantazji, snów i marzeń, uczuć, okultyzmu, magii - można je nazwać poezją śpiewaną. Metal gotycki przyczynił się do podziałów w  subkulturze gotyckiej, słuchający gothic metalu uważają się za tzw. gotów i identyfikują się z tą subkulturą.
