Glendale is a city in
Maricopa County,
Arizona,
USA. As of the
2000 census, the city population was 218,812. According to 2005 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 239,435. It is a major suburb of
Phoenix. The
NHL's
Phoenix Coyotes and
NLL's
Arizona Sting began playing here when
Jobing.com Arena (formerly the Glendale Arena) opened in December 2003. Also in Glendale is the new
University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the
NFL's
Arizona Cardinals and the
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, which opened in August 2006. In 2008,
Super Bowl XLII is scheduled to be played there. Both venues are part of the
Westgate City Center development plan, meant to spur growth in the sparsely inhabitated Yucca district. It is also home of the family of
American Idol winner,
Jordin Sparks.
