Giant (mythology)

The mythology and legends of many different cultures include mythological creatures/monsters of human appearance but prodigious size and strength. "Giant" is the English word commonly used for such beings, derived from one of the most famed examples: the gigantes of Greek mythology. In various Indo-European mythologies, gigantic peoples are featured as primeval creatures associated with chaos and the wild nature, and they are frequently in conflict with the gods, be they Olympian or Norse. There are also other stories featuring giants in the Old Testament, perhaps most famously Goliath. Attributed to them are superhuman strength and physical proportions, a long lifespan, and thus a great deal of knowledge as well.

Les géants de Catalogne sont des statues qui émanent de la culture populaire de chaque village de l'autonomie espagnole. Présents à Barcelone dans chaque quartier, chaque agglomération ancienne de Catalogne a ses géants, qui ont une identité associée à la légende locale. Parfois ils représentent des figures locales comme des cafetiers fameux. Ils ont aussi une histoire personnifiée, qui n'est pas figée : les conjectures furent nombreuses de par le pays lorsqu'on apprit que la géante d'un couple de ces énormes statues de bois était enceinte...

Ein Riese ist ein besonders großes, mächtiges Wesen vieler Mythologien, Sagen und Märchen. Davon abgeleitet ist „Riese“ auch eine umgangssprachliche Bezeichnung für einen außergewöhnlich großen Menschen. Die Auseinandersetzung mit ihnen in Sage, Mythos und Märchen steht häufig für den Kampf (und meistens auch für den Sieg) gegen eine überkommene, archaische und daher nicht mehr tragfähige Bewusstseinsstruktur. Fast alle Völker auf der Welt besaßen Geschichten über Riesen, zum Beispiel auch die Indianer. Sie erzählten von den Riesen als Urmenschen.

Olbrzym - zwany także wielkoludem, jest fikcyjną istotą, podobną do człowieka, lecz o wiele od niego większą. Występuje w licznych mitach, baśniach i legendach, a także literaturze fantasy i grach fabularnych. Choć słowo gigant w szczególności odnosi się do istot z mitologii greckiej, używane jest też często po prostu jako synonim "olbrzyma".

Reus is een stad in de Spaanse autonome regio Catalonië, in de provincie Tarragona. Het ligt aan de noordoostkust van Spanje, slechts 13 kilometer vanaf de stad Tarragona, aan de Costa Daurada, aan de Middellandse Zee. De stad had op 1 januari 2006 een inwonertal van 101.485. Het is de hoofdstad van de comarca Baix Camp.
