Gesta Danorum

Gesta Danorum ("Deeds of the Danes") is a work of Danish history, by 12th century author Saxo Grammaticus ("Saxo the Literate", literally "the Grammarian"). It is the most ambitious literary undertaking of medieval Denmark and an essential source for the nation's early history, one that helps define the national identity. In addition, the Gesta offers singular reflections on European affairs in the high Middle Ages from a unique Scandinavian perspective, supplementing what has been tradited by historians from Western and Southern Europe.

La Geste des Danois (en latin Gesta Danorum ou Historia Danica), est une œuvre de l'historien médiéval Saxo Grammaticus, rédigé vers l’an 1200 au monastère de Sorø. Il s’agit du premier livre danois et il a exercé une grande influence dans l’historiographie et la littérature danoises. Écrit majeur réputé internationalement, c’est aujourd’hui un chef d’œuvre de la littérature médiévale et une référence en la matière.

Gesta Danorum (deutsch „Taten der Dänen“) ist eine um 1200 entstandene, in lateinischer Sprache geschriebene, großangelegte Geschichte des dänischen Geistlichen Saxo Grammaticus. Sie beginnt mit der Darstellung der sagenumwobenen Vorzeit der Dänen (Bücher 1-9) und reicht im geschichtlichen Teil (Bücher 10-16) bis in die Regierungszeit Knuts VI. (1185). Die Gesta Danorum sind nicht nur eine der wichtigsten Quellen für die frühe dänisch-nordische Geschichte, sondern auch ein bedeutendes Zeugnis für die Verarbeitung dänisch-nordischer Götter- und Heldensagenüberlieferung im Rahmen einer „Nationalgeschichte“.

Gesta Danorum to średniowieczna kronika historii Danii.Gesta Danorum (dosł. "Czyny Duńczyków") zostały zapisane przez Saxo Grammaticusa w języku łacińskim w 16 tomach. Dzieło to stanowi największe osiągnięcie średniowiecznej literatury duńskiej. Kronika powstała z polecenia duńskiego biskupa Absalona. Ostatnia księga została ukończona prawdopodobnie po roku 1222.
