German Democratic Republic

The German Democratic Republic (GDR; , DDR; commonly and informally known in English as East Germany) was a Communist state in the Soviet Zone of occupied Germany by the Soviet Union which was adjacent to the capitalist, democratic state of West Germany, and existed from 1949 to 1990.It consisted of the current German states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Saxony and the eastern part of Berlin.In 1955 the Republic was declared by the Soviet Union to be fully sovereign; however, Soviet troops remained, based on the four-power Potsdam agreement. As NATO troops remained in West Berlin and West Germany, the GDR and Berlin in particular became focal points of Cold War tensions. East Germany was a member of the Warsaw Pact and a close ally of the Soviet Union. Following the initial opening of sections of the Berlin Wall on November 9 1989, new elections were held on March 18 1990, and the governing party, the SED, lost its majority in the Volkskammer (the East German parliament) soon after. On August 23, the Volkskammer decided that the territory of the Republic would accede to the ambit of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany on October 3 1990. As a result of the unification on that date, the German Democratic Republic officially ceased to exist.

La République démocratique allemande (RDA ; Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) en allemand également appelée Allemagne de l'Est) est un ancien État européen socialiste, créé le 7 octobre 1949 par l’URSS à partir de territoires qu’elle occupait en Allemagne, dont Berlin-Est. La RDA est intégrée le 3 octobre 1990 à la République fédérale d’Allemagne (l’Allemagne de l'Ouest) lors de la réunification allemande.

Oktober 1949 auf dem Gebiet der sowjetischen Besatzungszone einschließlich des sowjetischen Sektors von Berlin erfolgte vier Jahre nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges auf Betreiben der Sowjetunion, nachdem zuvor mit Unterstützung der drei West-Alliierten auf dem Gebiet ihrer Besatzungszonen („Trizone“) die Bundesrepublik Deutschland gegründet worden war.

Niemiecka Republika Demokratyczna w skrócie NRD (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR) - państwo powstałe 7 października 1949 na terenie byłej sowieckiej strefy okupacyjnej (Sowjetische Besatzungszone in Deutschland, SBZ), obecnie nie istnieje.Jej powierzchnia liczyła 108 300 kilometrów kwadratowych i była zamieszkana przez 17 milionów ludzi, w latach 1949-1989 liczba ludności nie zmieniła się w znaczący sposób. Stolicą NRD był Berlin a konkretnie jego część zwana Berlinem Wschodnim (oddzielona od Berlina Zachodniego tak zwanym Murem Berlińskim). Nie było to zupełnie legalne, gdyż Berlin jako całość, podzielony na cztery sektory, podlegał okupacji czterech zwycięskich mocarstw, a więc Berlin Wschodni nie był częścią strefy sowieckiej (jeszcze do późnych lat 60. XX wieku trzeba było okazywać dowody osobiste przy wjeździe z terenu NRD na teren Berlina Wschodniego, zaś patrole amerykańskie, angielskie i francuskie miały do końca istnienia NRD wolny wstęp do Berlina Wschodniego, a radzieckie do Zachodniego).

La Repubblica Democratica Tedesca (RDT), (in tedesco Deutsche Demokratische Republik, abbreviato in DDR), nota anche come Germania Est, fu uno Stato socialista esistito dal 1949 al 1990 sul territorio precedentemente corrispondente alla zona di occupazione della Germania assegnata all'Unione Sovietica alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale.
