in January of 1811 and again from April to December of the same year when Monroe resigned to become

. He was officially elected to the office in December, but later died in a theater fire in
Richmond, Virginia
. His ashes where placed under a rock at Monumental Church in Richmond with the ashes of other victims of the fire including former senator and
president
