Geophysics is the physics of the Earth and its environment in space; also the study of the Earth using quantitative physical methods. The term geophysics sometimes refers only to the geological applications: Earth's shape; its gravitational and magnetic fields; its internal structure and composition; its dynamics and their surface expression in plate tectonics, the generation of magmas, volcanism and rock formation. However, modern geophysics organizations use a broader definition that includes the hydrological cycle including snow and ice; fluid dynamics of the oceans and the atmosphere; electricity and magnetism in the ionosphere and magnetosphere and solar-terrestrial relations; and analogous problems associated with the Moon and other planets.

Die Geophysik ist ein Teilgebiet der Geowissenschaften und gleichzeitig der Physik. Sie erforscht die physikalischen Eigenschaften und Vorgänge der Erdkruste und des Erdinnern (Physik der festen Erde, die Geophysik im engeren Sinn), umfasst aber genauso die Physik der Ozeane (Ozeanografie), der Atmosphäre (Meteorologie) und der Planeten unseres Sonnensystems.

La géophysique est une grande discipline des sciences de la Terre. C'est l’étude de la Terre par des méthodes quantitatives physiques (géothermie, magnétisme, séismologie, radioactivité, etc.)

Geofysik är vetenskapen om fysikaliska egenskaper och fenomen hos jorden och dess omgivning. Inom geofysiken studerar man bland annat jordens magnetfält och berggrunden och de lösa avlagringarnas fysiska egenskaper så som strålning, ledningsförmåga och tyngdkraft.

Geofizyka jest dyscypliną w dziedzinie nauk o Ziemi, w której bada się Ziemię, jako planetę metodami naukowymi używanymi w fizyce. Przedmiotem badań w geofizyce są procesy fizyczne zachodzące obecnie oraz w przeszłości w geosferach: litosferze, atmosferze i hydrosferze. Celem badań geofizycznych jest wyjaśnienie zjawisk obserwowanych w Ziemi na gruncie pojęć i terminów fizyki wykorzystując prawa i teorie fizyki. Geofizyka jest nauką teoretyczną, której ważnym elementem są także obserwacje i eksperymenty terenowe. Do grona światowej sławy geofizyków należą np. Maurycy Pius Rudzki (1862-1916),  Emil Wiechert (1861-1928) czy Andrija Mohorovičić (1857- 1836), czasem zalicza się do nich także wielkich fizyków: np. Galileusza (1564-1642), czy Izaaka Newtona (1643-1727) oraz matematyków: np. Johanna Carla Friedricha Gaussa (1777-1855). Do nauk o Ziemi należą także: geologia, geografia, geodezja, oceanografia i meteorologia. Geofizyka składa się z 4 podstawowych dziedzin:

• fizyki Ziemi,
• nauk o atmosferze i oceanie,
• hydrologii,
• fizyki przestrzeni kosmicznej.
